The LCD-4z is an open-back, over-ear planar magnetic headphone built around a 106 mm Nano-Scale Uniforce diaphragm and a double Fluxor magnet array with N50 neodymium magnets. Its 15-ohm impedance and 98 dB/1mW sensitivity let it work from a wide range of sources without a dedicated headphone amplifier, though a minimum of more than 100 mW is recommended, and more than 250 mW for the recommended power level.
The chassis and yokes are cast magnesium, which makes the headphone over 20% lighter than the original LCD-4, at 560 g. Other construction details include a carbon fiber suspension headband, a ventilated leather headstrap, leather ear cushions and gold-accented panels and hardware. Each unit is assembled and tested in the maker's California workshop.
The supplied 2.5 m braided cable uses directional OCC copper and terminates in a 4-pin balanced XLR. A 4-pin XLR to 1/4" adapter and a 1/4" to 3.5mm adapter are included for single-ended use, along with a travel case and warranty documents.
