The DAC3 converts digital audio from a USB source into analog sound using an ESS ES9281A PRO DAC with 32-bit processing. A headphone amplifier based on the LME49726 op-amp drives wired headphones from 12 ohms upward and gives a 2.0 V RMS output. The stereo output is relay-controlled and can also feed any analog input, such as powered speakers.
The unit is bus-powered over USB-C at 200 mA, with two-stage regulation to keep USB power variations out of the audio path. It needs no battery, firmware update or driver. A side-panel control sets the volume for both the headphone and line outputs. A sample rate indicator light shows the rate the operating system is set to. The converter handles MQA, PCM and DSD, with native playback from 44.1 kHz to 96 kHz and 192 kHz material re-sampled to 96 kHz.
It connects by USB-C to phones, tablets and computers, with a Lightning to USB-C cable included for iPhone and iPad. Android 5.0 or later devices that act as a USB-C host also work. Output is a 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack.
