The Clarett 4Pre USB provides four mic/line inputs, two of which also work as instrument inputs, plus four fixed-gain line inputs. On the output side there are four balanced line outputs and two independent headphone outputs. The converters work up to 24-bit/192 kHz and the page quotes a 118 dB dynamic range measured to the AES17 standard.
The Clarett preamps include an Air mode with impedance switching, which emulates the transformer-based ISA mic preamp to add high-end detail. ADAT expandability allows the channel count to grow for larger recording sessions.
Routing, cue mixes and monitor mixes are handled in Focusrite Control, which runs on Mac, PC, iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. Registering the hardware gives access to a software bundle that includes Brainworx bx_console Focusrite SC, Focusrite Red 2 & 3 plug-ins, XLN Audio Addictive Keys, a Softube Time and Tone Bundle and Ableton Live Lite. A three-year warranty is listed.
