The FR-8x is a self-contained digital accordion with a 41-key piano-type treble side and 120 velocity-sensitive bass buttons. A bellows-modelling system adjusts air resistance in real time according to the selected register and the number of notes played. It can be switched off for players who prefer the feel of earlier V-Accordions. Sounds cover accordion sets, 180 orchestra and percussion tones, 18 drum sets and Virtual Tone Wheel organs, with 128-voice polyphony.
Four multi-effects engines serve the accordion, Orchestra 1, Orchestra 2 and orchestra chord sections, each with 84 effect types. There is also a looper with overdub, 1,400 user programs, and three programmable chin switches for hands-free control. A 2.4-inch colour display handles editing. Right-hand modes allow up to four tones at once, and four 8 MB areas accept additional sounds.
The instrument has stereo speakers and a Ni-MH battery that charges while playing through the supplied AC adapter. Connections are on the instrument: two 1/4-inch outputs, a headphone jack, MIDI in and out, a USB memory port for MP3/WAV playback and recording, and a USB computer port for MIDI software.
